How Trying Not to Be Selfish Is Making You More Selfish

One of the biggest objections my clients have about self-care is that they don’t want to be selfish.

“I don’t want to do self-care because I don’t want to be selfish. It just doesn’t feel right to do nice things for myself or to take time away from others.”

It is then my job to educate them on the difference between being selfish and self-care. I try to help them see how self-care is most definitely not selfish but instead in everyone’s best interest.

Still, many people need to actually be actively convinced that self-care is not an optional indulgence but rather a vital necessity.

An Important Difference

Being selfish means looking out for yourself at the expense of others. It means considering yourself above and beyond everyone else.

Self-care is the opposite. It is looking after yourself and caring for yourself so you can be your best version for yourself and others.

Just think about how lovely is it to be around someone who is happy, well and content?

Self-care does that for you – and others.

However, a lack of self-care can be considered as selfish. Look at the following reasons:
